Dermal fillers are substances that are injected into and underneath the skin to enhance the appearance of the face and neck. Most commonly used dermal fillers are a hyaluronic acid based gel. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally present in the human body. Dermal fillers can be used to reconstruct the contours in a face that has lost volume due to aging and weight loss. They can be used to minimize and erase scars and creases in the skin. Common dermal filler procedures include increasing volume and size and/or enhancing the shape of the lips, enhancing the appearance of the cheek bones, filling in the voids or tear troughs below the eyes, and adding structure to the chin. Minor bleeding and bruising may occur. Little to no down time is necessary. Dermal fillers can last from 6-24 months, depending on the type of filler and the area it is placed in. If a patient no longer desires the look of their filler, it can be easily dissolved and complete reversal occurs within a week.
